Our Course Structure

At GermanMind, our standard courses typically last 8 weeks, but we know everyone’s journey is unique. That’s why we also offer intensive and combined courses, like A1.1 and A1.2 bundled into one programme.

A1 beginner Level

A1.1: No German required to start. Perfect course to start your German language journey, with basic German phrases, vocabulary, grammar, and introductions. You will be able to speak, read, listen and write beginner German, with an improved comprehension level.

A1.2: This follow-up to A1.1 expands your vocabulary, enhances your understanding of simple sentences, and delves deeper into basic grammar structures. You'll be able to understand and use familiar everyday expressions and basic phrases, introduce yourself and others, and ask and answer questions about personal details like job, age, and hobbies.

A1.3: The final course in the A1 Beginner level consolidates the knowledge gained in previous courses, improves conversational skills, and prepares you for the pre-intermediate level.

Your German Level:

  • Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.

  • Can introduce themselves and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where they live, people people they know and things they have.

  • Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.

A2 Pre-Intermediate Level

A2.1: Join our A2.1 German course if you can understand vocabulary, phrases, and simple sentences related to areas such as your personal life, family, employment, and hobbies. You will be able to communicate simple and routine tasks that require a direct exchange of information. Focus in speaking German from level A2.1.

A2.2: A follow on course from A2.1, where you will have an advanced level of comprehension, reading, writing and listening of basic German language skills as learnt in A2.1. 

A2.3: The final course instalment of pre-intermediate level, where you will focus more on speaking and presentation. Class interaction, reading aloud, listening exercises, and comprehension. Once complete, you will be able to successfully transition to the B level of intermediate learning.

Your German Level: 

  • Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment).

  • Can communicate in simple and routine terms requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.

  • Can describe aspects of their background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need in simple terms.

B1 Intermediate Level

B1.1: Join our intermediate level course if you can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters, such as regular encounters in work, school, and leisure. You will be able to successfully have an open dialogue when travelling in a German speaking country. 

B1.2:  A follow on course from B1.1, where you will produce your own text, connecting verbs, grammar and nouns to create correct sentence structures on topics of personal interest to you. 

B1.3: You will follow on from B1.2 to describe events, hopes, ambitions and future plans. You will be able to explain your opinions and briefly give reasons for them. 

B1.4: The final course instalment of intermediate level, where you will combine the four language skills learnt in B-level: reading, writing, listening and speaking. You will have the confidence and knowledge to present in class, to translate content and to cite readings. 

Your German Level: 

  • Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken.

  • Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.

  • Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.

B2 upper-Intermediate Level

B2.1: The first course of the upper-intermediate course series, where you will understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in your field of specialisation, for example business German for e-commerce.

B2.2: You will interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. You will be confident in all four language skills and be able to present your knowledge successfully,

B2.3+4: You will produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options. Class debates and presentations are held weekly.

B2.5+6: The final course instalment of upper- intermediate level, where you will solidify your knowledge and have confidence to stand alone in a German boardroom, or city restaurant, or simply chatting with friends on personal topics. 

Your German Level: 

  • Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation.

  • Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.

  • Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
